Shards FAQ

People post these things to avoid answering the same questions over and over again in different locations, tones, and phrases, which conveniently bypasses a large amount of vessel popping. That's why it's called Frequently Asked Questions, and the Internet-savvy are familiar with the concept due to its popularity.

If you have any suggestions for material that's not in the FAQ and should be, please drop us a line.

*Why haven't you instated the "Pay for Perks" system that has being discussed occasionally?
Pay for Perks and any other Shards upgrades are waiting for the rewrite. The rewrite will be in 2009 at the earliest. Pay for Perks will be added at that point. We apologize for any inconvenience. In the meantime, we do what we can to make Shards an enjoyable environment for everyone involved.
*I want feature X and...
Starfyre's always open to suggestions. Minor changes to the code can be added easily. If you find bugs, by all means, let us know! However, any major changes are going to have to wait until the rewrite.
*When's the rewrite?
It can start after Starfyre finishes his Masters degree, (probably in Dec 2008). So, sometime in 2009. Until then, full time job and full time school take priority.
*What does it take to get banned?
As tempting as it is, we do not freely wave the ban-hammer. The Admin does not run through rooms seeking excuses to ban players. Shards owes its existence to a website that started banning roleplayers, some provoked, some not. Just like you, we didn't appreciate that crap either.

Notably, Shards opened April 1999. About 10 people have been banned since inception, despite quite a few people itching for more, or worse yet, needlessly expecting the ax to fall. Without naming names, four were banned for active harassment of other players: the first for continually creating characters to circumvent a room ban solely to antagonize another player and the second for posting harassment in his bio so people couldn't filter it out. Since you can see how much people already put in their profiles, you can guess it must have been pretty nasty for us to consider banning someone for it. On another notable occasion, two people systematically went to every populated room on site screaming and swearing at the populace since they were angry with the Admin.

The rest followed the first example, making multiple accounts to pass more room bans, and then lying about it when confronted with evidence to the contrary.

Now, being strict with multiple accounts suddenly makes sense, doesn't it?

*Why are you so strict about multiple accounts?
Multiple accounts are primarily used to circumvent the ignore feature and room bans, which are your means of enforcing your privacy. Another caveat is fairness. If we're lax with personal accounts, then the people who follow the rules and only use one account get penalized with fewer character slots and fewer rooms than other people who abused the restriction.

Then there's the server resources issue: the more people using accounts at a time (multiple or otherwise) means that fewer people can get in, the server slows down and bandwidth shoots up, and we become liable for overage charges from our host, which puts one more dent in the Donation reserve. Needless to say, that's not cool.

*Why do you cap the number of rooms/characters/simultaneous user sessions?
BANDWIDTH! Though we're not near the bandwidth threshold that Planet sets for us, all of these items cost us in bandwidth every time they are accessed. The resource requirements increase linearly with greater caps.

Furthermore, we cap the number of rooms and characters and sessions for social reasons. I address these individually.

  • Rooms
The more rooms one has, the more one person and one person alone can support an entire hub. As Abel put it, he coined the term 'hub' as a way to radiate roleplay in all directions in the same manner spokes of a wheel splay out. Smaller numbers of rooms mean the players have to work together to create a setting, so more people have greater interest in furthering that setting's story. If one person bears the brunt of creation for one hub, the entire play tends to revolve around that one person, which has detrimental results. What if that person cannot make time for regular roleplay due to short-lived, personal issues? The hub will essentially die off in that time, then revive at the arrival of the person in question. While the roleplay with that person might be great, it is not an indication that the hub is healthy.

Also, Shards statistically has 1.5 accounts per room. The more rooms players have, the more widespread the populace gets, instead of having a tightly knit community. As it stands, we view the number of rooms available as a problem that is not helped by adding to the cap.

  • Characters
We cap the number of characters for a similar reason. We encourage you to branch out and play in multiple settings and wear multiple faces. But where's the stopping point? If you create a new character a week, how involved are you in the role? Far be it for us to tell you that's a wrong thing to do. Frankly, it's good to experiment with different concepts and ideas. After all, you don't pick out a new outfit by going to the store and picking out the first plausible-looking combination, why should that idea apply here? Continuing the metaphor, though, it leads to saying that you cannot buy out the whole store and take it home with you without massive overhead.

  • Open Sessions
We allow only two active open sessions for several reasons. Computer resources are #1 again. As many as half of the characters simultaneously logged into Shards can be second sessions, which means that one set of people costs double bandwidth. Increasing that cap creates a sharp graphical curve of bandwidth costs. The mathematically inclined can calculate how much that would cost comparatively. Though we don't doubt that some of you multitask well enough to play five characters simultaneously, that slows the average player down, no matter how awesome they are. If you're concentrating on 5 characters at once, how much are you making everyone else wait on you and how well are you really playing the role?
*Why isn't Shards a Non-Profit Organization?
http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx96_1045.html

Shards is not registered with the Better Business Bureau like a formal non-profit because we have not sought tax breaks from Shards. None of the Admin have the time to delve that deeply into the accounting even if we wanted to sign up as one.

And check this out! Signing up for the BBB or registering as a business costs even more money, as you must pay a substantial fee just to start the paperwork. Registering as a business exposes us to tax liabilities: Dallas charges property taxes for "business personal property" which potentially includes the apartment, the computers, furniture used in operating Shards, Texas franchise taxes, etc. And finally, the joke would be on us, because Shards is not a charitable organization and thus is not eligible for 501(c) status. The law would consider Shards a business that just doesn't happen to turn a profit.

*Why isn't Shards run more like a business?
Well, which do you want? A Non Profit Organization or a Capitalist foundation that's interested in turning a profit? Do you want freeplay based on donations, or a business with business rules, where everyone has to pay to so much as sign up, and pay monthly/yearly dues? Besides, taxes suck.
*How come we're never told anything about decisions regarding Shards until after they happen?
The two main ways that the admins communicate with the Shards population are the Courtyard announcements and the Shards Forums Message Board. The Courtyard announcements are posted in the Courtyard of Shards in various colors for full visibility, and the Forums are linked through the Courtyard. It is the responsibility of everyone in Shards to make their own effort to become involved. The less you involve yourself, the less you will be heard when decisions are made.
*That person is stalking/harassing me, what do I do?
As per the AUP, we do not take responsibility for other people's behavior. We give you the ignore feature and the room ban for precisely this reason, so you can protect yourself. The admin can step in when the ignore feature and the room ban are insufficient. At this point, please have logs available for us to read, and be up front with us, too. Often when someone has an issue with another player, they ask us for help then refuse to name names and feed us the details, which binds our hands from helping you. So be honest, up front, and informative, and we'll do the best we can for you.

Remember, people of all ages get harassed all the time on forums, AIM, and various people-meet and blog sites. Forums, AIM, and blogs are not liable because of the Communications Decency Act passed in the United States. Shards is especially not at fault for harassment that takes place outside of Shards as you are the person who gives out your contact information, thus you are responsible for it.

*Why are minors allowed into Shards?
Minors are all over the Internet: AIM, MySpace, LiveJournal, et cetera. The admin firmly believe that it is the duty of the parents to guard their children from material they deem inappropriate, as that material changes depending on each individual parent's decisions. It is bad form to spank someone else's child without express permission and the admin are not babysitters. The AUP very expressly states these sentiments.
*So, how about that orgy?
How about not. We know that cybersex is going to happen. We just ask that you do this in private/invitation/invisible rooms. We consider Shards to be a very public place and public rooms quite obviously match that. Ask yourself this- "Is it socially acceptable to have an orgy in public IRL?" If the answer is no, act accordingly. If the answer is yes, get your head examined.
*Why do the admins have access to my private room logs?
Because the admins have on occasion received falsified/modified logs. To get the complete story, we match it to the source to verify that the material and the context for the complaint you send us is valid.

One of the main reasons people are uncomfortable with our access to the logs is that it feels like a breach of privacy. Well, the landlord to an apartment building has a key to every apartment. However, they do not have the time to install cameras in every bedroom and bathroom, and they certainly don't have the time to watch all the titillating footage. We certainly don't have the time, much less the inclination. We just ask that you respect public rooms as public locations in real life. In return, we'll respect your privacy in private rooms.

*Why won't you ban the person I'm complaining about?
The administration does not ban Shards users except in extreme circumstances. All citizens of Shards are given several options to limit contact with players with which they do not wish to interact. The most common option is the ignore list, which ignores all names connected to the master account in question. Shards citizens also have the ability to moderate their own rooms. Unless you can provide logs of harassment, the administration is not responsible until they try circumventing ignore and room ban. You can find more details about these feature and more in the Command Reference and the Room Builder Guide.
*Locke's a bitch and Star's never on.
That's a statement, not a question. Email links are available for Starfyre and LadyLockeout in the Courtyard and you can use these at any time. If you don't like them/can't reach them, consider contacting a Pathfinder. If you do not like talking to one Pathfinder, please try one of the others. If they are not on, try reading their profiles- some of them leave further contact information so you can reach them directly for Shards concerns.
*What is Locke's job description and why haven't you fired her yet?
Locke's job is to handle instances of multiple registrations, sort through harassment complaints, delete dead accounts to consolidate space, and generally keep Shards running as smoothly as possible. In short, Locke covers all the non-technical details, so Starfyre has more time to devote to homework, so he can graduate school faster, so he can rewrite Shards faster, and hopefully everyone can be happier. It's an ugly, unpleasant job that needed someone to tough it out and take it in the teeth. She is routinely sworn at, called filthy names, and treated like crap, which tests her temper. Let's face it-not many people like cops, either. In our experience, the majority of complaints come from people that she has previously caught doing something they shouldn't. Locke hasn't been fired yet, because she's damned good at her job.
*What's up with the Pathfinders? They're never on either.
Pathfinders have their own lives and financial needs that take precedence over Shards. If you want to contact a Pathfinder, PM them, but also read their profile. Very often they leave forwarding contact information. Feedback@Shattered-realms.com is most likely the quickest way to contact any administrative member of Shards, including all the Pathfinders.

And realize that the Pathfinders like to roleplay too! As such, when they are not in their Master Account handles, they will not appear on the Pathfinder list, despite the fact that they are actually online.

For more information on Pathfinders, look here.

*How can I become a Pathfinder?
By acting like you think one should act. Be familiar with the site and its functions; be helpful and kind to newbs and adept alike. Eventually we will notice, and if there's an opening, we may ask you to join. Be forewarned- there is no training session for Pathfinders, because we will only ask you if we think you are doing a great job already.
*Locke, Why is Judgement still a pathfinder?
This is something she gets asked a lot. In her words, "I have no fucking idea. Please direct all questions/complaints regarding any and all pathfinders directly to Starfyre. Thank you"
*Why is it that the population base is so small?
Shards originally had a no-advertisement policy and we do little recruiting. And life takes a toll on the player population because the demographic with the most free time are young. When you get older, that time evaporates quicker than tears in the desert.

Another reason is that Newbs arrive all the time, and are very often frozen out for various reasons, like cliquish behavior, they don't quite understand the style, or they haven't learned to read the whole page to know what's going on before they trudge in careworn and in need of a drink. Or sometimes they just plain suck.

It's not up to the Pathfinders alone to welcome and train them- it's up to you, too. Pathfinders are intended to be a resource, not the end-all be-all. Many players who started in Shards and its predecessor never would have stayed if they hadn't been welcomed, as opposed to provoked or ignored. Not every newb can be told, "Ask a Pathfinder" for everything. It's up to the Pathfinders to embrace them, but it's up to you, too. After all, the Pathfinders touch this world briefly and can help shape and motivate it, but we're only as affective as the entire populace. So take the gamble, try training a newb or two. After all, if you show them how you want to play, you may one more person likely to be compatible with your style.

*What do you want from the players?
Cohesiveness. The players in Shards are really good at building new rooms and hubs and characters. We applaud you for it and it's a marvel to read new material and see what you're going to create next. But don't forget, work together! And our biggest request? Be kind to newbies. The newb who comes in tomorrow knowing nothing about roleplay may write you into a deliciously squirming corner once taught. So embrace your newbies, treat them gently, and lure them into your fold. They're new and malleable!
*Why is it that so many people suck at roleplaying?
See above. The Pathfinders can show you the way and help connect interested players with hubs/groups they might enjoy. That's the literal definition of the word. But it's up to you to help teach others how to play in Shards. This includes grammar and typos! Sometimes a player doesn't actually suck, but plays in a distinctly different style that, with only a few instructions, will help them blossom into a great player. Some still suck, but keep trying to help them, because you never know who will, after a bit of time, out-play YOU. If you want people not to suck, give them a leg-up instead of a kick in the back of the knees. Don't forget, some people are at different stages in their life than others and different maturity levels. Their play reflects that. Just because someone's at a different place in their life, you have no reason to demonize them.

Be gentle, or I'll dent your head. :)

*How do newbies get help?
Ask! Have a question? Email us, PM us, or PM someone online. Please be patient if it takes awhile for someone to reply. Until you hear from us, all Shards Documentation, including the Newbie Guide, the Command Reference, and many others are linked from the Courtyard and you never know when you might find something there that helps.
*Why aren't you putting Shards before your other responsibilities?
People don't always ask in precisely these terms, but it's implied. At first brush, our reaction is kind of incredulous shock that we'd get this sort of reaction. I mean... really, what is more important? Paying bills and getting ahead in life or roleplaying? Feeding cats or reading forums? Judging from the cats' opinions (and how often we want our faces stepped on at 5am), we're going to go with feeding the cats and paying bills. And since we can ultimately pay more bills the further we get ahead in career and educational advancements, it's in your interest that we continue that path too.
*Now, why haven't you said all this before?!?
We have. Answers to all of these questions are nestled in the Shard's documentation, AUP, Newbie Guide, the Forums, and have been repeated frequently. I guess we did need a FAQ!
